Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM), successfully flight tested by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy off the coast of Chandipur in Odisha.
This success will further enhance the defence capability of Indian Naval Ships against the aerial threats
VL – SRSAM Missile
- The Vertical Launch – Short Range Surface to Air Missile, is a quick reaction surface-to-air missile developed by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO)
- VL-SRSAM is a ship-borne weapon system that is meant for neutralizing various aerial threats at close ranges including the sea-skimming targets.
- Developed by: Defence Research and Development Organisation
- Range: 40km to 50km and at an altitude of around 15km.
- Carrying Capacity: Each Vertical Launch System (VLS) can hold forty missiles in a twin quad-pack
- Maximum Speed: Mach 4.5
- Propulsion: Solid-propellant rocket
- Mass: 154 kg
- Design
- Its design is based on Astra missile which is a Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air missile.
- Two key features of the VL-SRSAM are cruciform wings and thrust vectoring.
