DIGI YATRA Project

Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry of Civil Aviation was held in New Delhi to discuss ‘DIGI YATRA’.

Civil Aviation Ministry is set to roll out the DIGI YATRA project to achieve “contactless, seamless processing of passengers.
In the first phase, it is proposed to be rolled out at two Airports, Varanasi and Bengaluru, in August 2022.
The Project will roll out at five airports – Pune, Vijayawada, Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad — in its second phase by March 2023.
The Airport Authority of India will identify the airports where the Project will be implemented in a phased manner.

It is an initiative designed to ensure contactless, seamless passenger processing at airports and is based on facial recognition technology (FRT).
In essence, the idea envisions any traveller being able to pass through numerous checkpoints at the airport utilising a paperless and contactless procedure, establishing their identification through facial recognition and linking it to their boarding card.

A centralised registration system for passengers, each was getting a unique ID on booking the tickets.
ID can be created by sharing the name, e-mail id, mobile number and details of any identity proof, including Aadhaar.
A biometrics-based digital processing system for passenger entry.
Voluntary for passengers to opt for facial recognition biometrics for air travel.
Real-time notifications about congestion and delays of flights.

To enhance passenger experience and provide all air travellers with a simple and easy experience.
To achieve better usage of existing infrastructure using enhanced “Digital Framework”.
Digitise current manual processes to bring better efficiencies.
Enhance security standards and improve current system performance.
The rollout of the “Digi Yatra” system with a digital “ID” backed by a solid, verifiable government-issued identity like AADHAAR, passport & others, enabling a seamless travel experience for Passengers at all airports across India.

Under Section 8 of the Companies Act of 2013, the Digi Yatra Foundation (DYF) was established as a joint venture (JV) firm in 2019. AAI (26 percent of the shares) and BIAL, DIAL, GHIAL, MIAL, and CIAL are its shareholders.
The Foundation was established to create the Digi Yatra Central Ecosystem (DYCE).
The curator of the Passenger ID validation procedure would be the pan-Indian Digi Yatra Foundation.
Additionally, it will foster agreement among Indian aviation stakeholders.
