About I2U2
- India, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States form a new group called I2U2
- In the grouping’s name, ‘I2’ stands for India and Israel, whereas ‘U2’ stands for USA and the UAE.
- Aim: To re-energize and reinvigorate American ties around the world.
- According to the White House, the group founded as part of the US government’s attempts to revitalize American ties.
- Its creation is seen as one of the key dividends of the ‘Abraham Accords’ that saw the normalization of ties between Israel and UAE
- Background
- October 2021: A meeting of the foreign ministers of the these four countries took place when Indian Foreign Minister was visiting Israel
- At that time, it was called the International Forum for Economic Cooperation
- The India-Israel-US-UAE grouping mainly deals with issues concerning maritime security, infrastructure, digital infrastructure and transport
- At that time, Ambassador of UAE to India, had referred to the new grouping as the West Asian Quad
- About first summit
- The first-ever virtual summit of the I2U2 grouping in July 2022.
- Focus of the Meeting
- To discuss the food security situation as well as other areas of collaboration especially where UAE and Israel serve as innovation hubs
- The meet also outline Israel’s increasing integration in to the region
Significance of the Grouping
- First of its kind Quad like Block in the Middle East
- After Indo-Pacific US and Indias partnership in Middle East
- Major Blow to Pakistan since UAE will be an active Partner
- India is a massive consumer market. It is a massive producer of high-tech and highly sought-after goods as well.
- So, there are a number of areas where these countries can work together, whether its technology, trade, climate, COVID-19, and potentially even security as well.
- Biotechnology is also prominent field which Deepens trade and economic ties between these countries
- Opportunity to collaborate with innovation hubs like UAE and Israel
