Data of Unemployment
- The unemployment rate in the country grew to 7.83 per cent in April from 7.60 per cent in March, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) data.
- The unemployment rate in urban areas was higher at 9.22 per cent compared to 8.28 per cent in March
- New Findings
- The unemployment rate saw a decrease of 0.6% and fell to 4.2% in 2020-21, compared with 4.8% in 2019-20, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for 2020 – 21 released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
- This means that only 4.2% of adults who looked for jobs could not get any work in rural and urban areas of the country in 2020-21
Reasons for Unemployment
- Increase in Labour Force
- Over time, the mortality rate has decreased fast without a matching decrease in the birth rate, resulting in unparalleled population expansion in the country.
- Naturally, this was followed by a significant increase in the labour force.
- Social Settings
- The caste system is widely used in India. In some locations, some castes are barred from working. Many such people will be accessible in large joint families with large businesses who do not work and rely on the family’s joint revenue.
- In the rural area women were not allowed to work and women who used to work in the night shifts are less due to insecurity.
- Ineffective Education System
- India’s education system is broken, and it does not priorities the development of human resources. The curriculum and syllabus taught in schools and colleges do not correspond to the current industry requirements.
Issues with Unemployment
- The issue of unemployment leads to the issue of poverty.
- Young people who have been unemployed for a long period engage in unlawful and unethical acts in order to make money. As a result, there is a rise in crime throughout the country.
- Antisocial elements can easily recruit unemployed people. This causes people to lose faith in the country’s democratic values.
- Unemployed persons frequently become hooked to drugs and alcohol or attempt suicide, resulting in losses to the country’s human resources.
- It also has an impact on the country’s economy, as the workforce that could have been productively engaged to generate resources instead becomes reliant on the remaining working population, resulting in rising socio – economic costs for the government.
Government Measures to Counter Unemployment
- Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) – It is a social security programme that was established in 2005 to provide a minimum of 100 days of paid work per year to all families whose adult members choose unskilled labour-intensive work. People have the right to work under this act.
- Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) – Launched in 2015 aim at skill development for youth
- Stand Up India Scheme, launched in 2016 aims to facilitate bank loans between Rs 10 lakh and Rs. 1 crore to at least one SC or ST borrower and at least one women borrower per bank branch for setting up a greenfield enterprise.
