China emerged as the top buyer of Indian Broken Rice during the pandemic, with the neighbouring country importing 16.34 lakh metric tonnes of India’s total rice export of 212.10 LMT in financial year 2021-22
China’s total rice import from India of 16.34 LMT, nearly 97 per cent, or 15.76 LMT, was broken rice, which has seen a spike in demand from that country.
Why does China import more Broken Rice?
- The reason for this increase is the high demand for rice in this country for making noodles and wine.
- Another reason for this increase in demand can also be the rising prices of maize.
- The rise in demand comes at a time when food prices have risen globally in recent months, especially after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Broken Rice
- fragments of rice grains, broken in the field, during drying, during transport, or during milling

Uses of Broken Rice
- Human Consumption
- These rice are less expensive, and so are preferred by poorer consumers
- It is consumed as part of local food in West Africa
- Industrial Uses
- It is called brewers’ rice, as brewers have traditionally used it
- Used by the pet food industry, and for livestock feeding and aquaculture
- Also used to make starch which is used as laundry starch and in foods, cosmetics and textile manufacture
