News Highlights
The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched PSLV-C53 which placed three Singapore satellites.
Focus Points
- The mission proposes to demonstrate the utilisation of the spent upper stage of the launch vehicle as a stabilised platform for scientific payloads subsequent to the separation of the satellites.
PSLV-C53
- PSLV-C53 is the second dedicated commercial mission of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO.
- Designed to put in orbit the DS-EO satellite, along with two other co-passenger satellites (NeuSAR and Scoob-1) from Singapore.
- This is the 55th mission of PSLV and the 15th mission using the PSLV-Core Alone variant.
- It is the 16th PSLV launch from the second launch pad.
DS-EO satellite
- NeuSAR (155 kg) is the first Singaporean small commercial satellite with a Synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) payload, which is capable of imaging in day and night and under all weather conditions.
SCOOB-I
- SCOOB-I satellite is the first satellite in the Student Satellite Series (S3-I) student training program by Satellite Research Centre (SaRC) at Singapore
PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)
- PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) is an indigenously-developed expendable launch system of the ISRO.
- It is a third-generation launch vehicle. It is termed as the ‘Workhorse of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)
- It comes in the category of medium-lift launchers with a reach up to various orbits, including the Geo Synchronous Transfer Orbit, Lower Earth Orbit, and Polar Sun Synchronous Orbit..
- It is the first launch vehicle of India that has liquid stages. There is a total of 4 stages in this launch vehicle.
- First Stage – PS 1 – PSLV uses the S139 solid rocket motor that is augmented by 6 solid strap-on boosters.
- Second Stage – PS 2 – PSLV uses an Earth storable liquid rocket engine for its second stage, known as the Vikas engine, developed by Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre.
- Third Stage – It is a solid rocket motor that provides the upper stages high thrust after the atmospheric phase of the launch.
- Fourth Stage – The PS4 is the uppermost stage of PSLV, comprising two Earth storable liquid engines.
- Three variants of PSLV
- PSLV-G: It has strap-on motors
- PSLV – CA: It does not have strap-on motors
- PSLV – XL: It has strap-on motors
