News Highlight
According to the Emissions Gap Report 2022, the pledges by countries to reduce GHG would still leave the world warmer by 2.4-2.6 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
Key Takeaway
- The report found that the updated pledges by countries, also known as nationally determined contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, only reduce the projected greenhouse emissions by 1 per cent by 2030.
Emissions Gap Report 2022
- About
- The report was released recently by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
- This is the 13th edition of the Report.
- Title
- ‘The Closing Window — Climate Crisis Calls For Rapid Transformation of Societies’
- Objective
- Emission Gap Reports assess the gap between countries’ pledges on emission reduction and the reduction required to bring down the global temperature increase below 2°C by the year 2100.
The key findings of the report
- Falling of achieving the goals
- The report warned that the world is falling short of achieving the goals set under the 2015 Paris Agreement and recommended an urgent system-wide transformation and GHG emission reduction by unprecedented levels in the next eight years.
- Temperature rise
- The current policies will lead to a 2.8°C temperature rise by 2100.
- Implementation of current climate pledges will only reduce this to a 2.4 to 2.6°C temperature rise by the end of this century.
- GHG emission
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) must be reduced by 45 per cent by 2030 to achieve the Paris Agreement goals.Â
- However, the report shows that the emissions are at dangerous and record-high levels and are still rising.
- Remedial actions
- The latest report recommended remedial actions in 6 areas – electricity supply, industry, transport and building sectors, and food and financial systems.
- Investment for a low-carbon economy
- It estimates that the global transformation to a low-carbon economy would require 4 to 6 trillion USD in investment each year.
