News Highlights

Google engineer Blake Lemoine was placed on administrative leave after he claimed that LaMDA, a language model created by Google AI, had become sentient and begun reasoning like a human being.

What is LaMDA?

  • LaMDA or Language Models for Dialog Applications is a machine-learning language model created by Google as a chatbot that is supposed to mimic humans in conversation.
  • LaMDA is built on Transformer, a neural network architecture that Google invented and open-sourced in 2017.
  • Google initially introduced LaMDA as its generative language model for dialogue apps during its developer conference I/O (Input/Output) in 2021, ensuring that the Assistant can chat on any topic.
  • LaMDA can converse freely about an almost infinite number of topics, which the business believes will enable more natural ways of interacting with technology as well as totally new categories of useful applications.
  • Nature of ConversationĀ
    • While most conversations focus around certain topics, they are frequently open-ended, meaning they might begin in one location and end in another, encompassing a variety of topics and issues.
    • When talking with a friend, for example, a conversation could start with a movie show and then move on to the region where it was filmed.
    • Conventional chatbots will soon be displaced by this fluid character of dialogue.
    • Because they are built to follow specific, pre-defined discussion segments, they are unable to follow such fluctuating conversations.
    • LaMDA, on the other hand, is meant to allow for free-flowing discussions on nearly any subject.

Upgradation of LaMDA

  • Google launched LaMDA 2.0 in 2022, which expands on LaMDA 1.0.
  • The new model may be able to take an idea and generate “imaginative and relevant descriptions,” keep on topic even if the user wanders off, and offer a list of items required for a specific task.
What is a neural network? – A neural network is an AI tech that attempts to mimic the web of neurons in the brain to learn and behave like humans.

Advantages of ChatbotĀ

  • Chatbots are useful for delivering customer care and support at any time of day or night, seven days a week.
  • They also free up phone lines and are significantly less expensive than hiring individuals to provide help in the long run.
  • Chatbots are getting better at understanding what customers want and giving the assistance they require thanks to artificial intelligence and natural language processing.
  • Chatbots are also popular with businesses since they can collect statistics on consumer enquiries, response times, and satisfaction, among other things.

Disadvantages of Chatbots

  • Even with natural language processing, they may not be able to fully interpret a customer’s input and deliver incomprehensible responses.
  • Many chatbots are likewise restricted in the types of questions they can answer.
  • Implementing and maintaining chatbots can be costly, especially if they need to be customized and updated frequently.
