Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC)
- It is a high-speed and high-capacity railway track dedicated solely to freight transportation.
- It entails a seamless integration of improved infrastructure and cutting-edge technologies.
- It involves two arms: the Eastern DFC and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) which link between Dadri and Khurja.
Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC)
- Length : 1504 km
- Connecting Places : Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai
- Funding : Japan International Cooperation Agency under special terms for economic partnership (STEP).
- Passing Cities : Vadodara,Ahmedabad, Palanpur, Phulera and Rewari.
- Passing States: Uttar Pradesh , Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC)
- Length : 1856 km
- Connecting Places : Sahnewal (Ludhiana) in Punjab to Dankuni in West Bengal
- Funding : World Bank
- Passing States : Punjab, Haryana , Uttar Pradesh , Bihar , Jharkhand , West Bengal
Significance of DFC
- Enhanced Capacity:
- The DFC will modernize the transportation sector and increase capacity on Indian Railways’ trunk routes, as cargo trains would be able to travel freely on the DFC without being hampered by passenger train traffic.
- Decongestion:
- Around 70% of the freight trains currently operating on the Indian Railway network would be rerouted to freight routes, allowing more passenger trains to travel through.
- Energy Efficiency
- The DFC will allow for speedier cargo movement while also increasing energy efficiency.
