The Gujarat government in association with the Ministry of Culture organised the three-day conference on Vadnagar with the intent to facilitate a dialogue and chart out actionable recommendations in archaeological heritage and culture.
Where is Vadnagar ?
- Location – Gujarat
- One of the Buddhist heritage centres.
Vadnagar’s History
- The Puranas and even the records of the famed Chinese traveller Hieu-en-Tsang describe it as a rich town during the 7th century.
- According to an inscription on the Arjun Bari Gate, King Kumarpal fortified the city in 1152 AD.
- Other historical names of place are Chamatkar Pur, Anandpur, Snehpur, and Vimalpur.
Why is Vadnagar Significant?
- Around 20,000 artefacts and Buddhist relics have been discovered here, some dating back to the second century.
- ASI uncovered over 64 natural rock shelters turned into monks’ residential sites from Vadnagar.
- A large stupa on top of a hill, as well as another six stupas, have been discovered here.
